Nature and extent of collection

 

3507 pieces. Large number of Roman coins from Stevens-Cox collection (mainly collected at Ilchester, Somerset) and a large collection of South West trade tokens.  Small collection of various medals.

Iron Age coins: 4

Roman coins: 1047

British coins: 1326

British tokens: 1079, including a large collection of 17th Century Somerset trade tokens.

European coins: 1

Asian coins: 10, including two examples of Chinese knife money.

Middle Eastern coins: 27

African coins: 2

American coins: 2

Oceania: 3

Modern and paper money: 55 banknotes, mostly local issues but collection includes 1 Japanese government one cent note from World War Two; 1 cheque book.

Medals (commemorative or military): 200, including British Red Cross medals, coronation medals, 1 medal issued by the Worshipful Company of Glovers of London and 1 16th Century Italian commemorative medal.

Paranumismatica: 4, including one coin purse dating to 1800-1840

Specific strengths: Roman coins.

 

Library: Small collection of around ten books on numismatics.

Does the museum offer a service for identifying objects and other public enquiries? Yes, we act as a receiving centre for the Portable Antiquities officer at Taunton.
