44,000 pieces. A large, extensive and comprehensive collection of coins, bank notes, counters, medals and tokens.

Modern and paper money: Around 2,000 objects in total, including credit notes, cheques, deposit slips and around 300 banknotes
Medals (commemorative or military): Around 1,800, both commemorative and military

How much detail in database entries? This varies from record to record.
Are images incorporated? Images are included for a small proportion of numismatic records.
Is the database accessible to the public? Yes, by appointment.
Is the database publicly accessible online? A limited selection of our database is available on our website;
Are there permanent numismatic displays? No.
Is numismatic material incorporated into more general displays? Yes, currently in our Modern History gallery, Saints & Scholars, Elements science gallery and Discover History interactive zone.
Is there a facility for temporary exhibitions? Yes.
Have there been numismatic exhibitions in the past? If so, what? Yes, there used to be a dedicated numismatic gallery. More recently there was an exhibition to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the setting up of the Northern Numismatic Society in Belfast.

Is there a study facility? Yes, we offer a limited service by appointment.
Is equipment (balances, magnifying glasses, etc.) provided? Equipment can be provided on request.

Is there a handling collection? No.
Are numismatic collections used in Education sessions? Not yet.
Do numismatic collections feature in gallery talks, lectures? Yes.
Are there other engagement activities based around numismatic collections? No.

Does the museum offer a service for identifying objects and other public enquiries? Yes, although we have no Numismatic Curator on staff.
Is there any numismatic expertise in-house? If so, who, and in what areas? No.
Is there access to external expertise? If so, who and in what areas? We have contacts within the Northern Numismatic Society, with Hiberno-Norse expertise.
