44,000 pieces. A large, extensive and comprehensive collection of coins, bank notes, counters, medals and tokens.

British tokens: Around 3,800

Modern and paper money: Around 2,000 objects in total, including credit notes, cheques, deposit slips and around 300 banknotes

Medals (commemorative or military): Around 1,800, both commemorative and military

Paranumismatica: Tickets, gaming counters, around 500 counters

Are there permanent numismatic displays? No.

 

Is numismatic material incorporated into more general displays? Yes, currently in our Modern History gallery, Saints & Scholars, Elements science gallery and Discover History interactive zone.

 

Is there a facility for temporary exhibitions? Yes.

 

Have there been numismatic exhibitions in the past? If so, what? Yes, there used to be a dedicated numismatic gallery. Does the museum offer a service for identifying objects and other public enquiries? Yes, although we have no Numismatic Curator on staff.

Is there access to external expertise? If so, who and in what areas? We have contacts within the Northern Numismatic Society, with Hiberno-Norse expertise.
