Nature and extent of collection


Our collections policy covers the area of the metropolitan borough of Bolton, so with the exception of local finds or collections we do not actively acquire numismatic material.


All numbers below are estimated


Greek coins: 23

Roman coins: 391

British coins: 901

British tokens: 659

World coinage: 400 (yet to be fully inventoried)

Modern and paper money: 18 banknotes

Medals: 1109

Paranumismatica: 392 badges; 7 counters

Other: Benin currency; some related material in the Ethnography collection

Specific strengths: British coins and tokens, medals, Roman coinage.

How much detail in database entries? Mostly inventory, but most coins have obverse and reverse inscriptions and designs described. Mint and moneyer information is included where possible on records for medieval coins.


Are images incorporated? Yes.


Is the database accessible to the public? No, but there is some info on Flickr about some of the coins in the collection.


Is the database publicly accessible online? What is the URL if so? No.

Is there a facility for temporary exhibitions? Yes, there are two temporary exhibition spaces.
