Nature and extent of collection

Relatively small yet very comprehensive numismatic collection that is very locally relevant but also features objects from around the world. The bulk of the collection is comprised of Roman coins and commemorative medals but also includes coins, tokens and other objects from a diverse range of places and periods.

British coins: Yes – collection includes coins of Henry VII, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, George III, Victoria

British tokens: Yes – collection includes tokens from Cheshire, Warwickshire, Lancashire, Wales, Norfolk

European coins: Yes – includes coinage from Ireland, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Russia

Asian coins: Yes – coins from India, China, Kong Kong and Turkey

African: Yes – 4 manilas

Modern and paper money: Commemorative set of Britain’s first decimal coins, small number of banknotes (including 2 in a frame)

Medals (commemorative or military): Yes – diverse collection including coronation medals, jubilee medals, school attendance medals, Great Exhibition medal, Lusitania medal (British copy in box) as well as a number of locally relevant medals such as a Southport Flower Show medal, Bootle Photographic Society medal, medal to commemorate centenary of St Mary’s School, Bootle, medal commemorating George V and Mary’s visit to Borough of Bootle in 1913. Also Imperial Russian Order 1917 (presented to Mayor of Southport for services to Russian flag day, 1916)

Paranumismatica: Passes for local baths

Other: Badges (including 3 silver enamel nursing badges); brass balances for weighing sovereigns and half-sovereigns. Tokens from New York, Canada and Australia
